Students receive comprehensive training under a new Province of Ontario plan to consolidate
Health Care Aid and three levels of PSW training. Students require dexterity skills and will also
develop skills ranging from managing households and meal preparation to knowledge of personal
hygiene, assistance with medications, and abuse and safety issues. Faculty includes Registered
Nurses who instruct and supervise the course.
Graduates provide long-term care and support services to the elderly, persons physically and/or
mentally challenged, the terminally ill, and those requiring assistance with mobility in long-term
care.
- 32 weeks (640 hours)
- Program includes:
- theory and practice (285 hrs)
- supervised clinical placement (180 hrs)
- precepted clinical placement with nursing homes and community preceptors (175 hrs)
Role of the PS Worker, Assisting a Person with Mobility, Household Management, Meal Preparation, Optimal Support and Care Planning, Personal Hygiene, Assisting the Family, Cognitive Impairment & Mental Health Issues, Assisting with Medications, Assisting a Person Who is Dying, Clinical Placement, Abuse and Safety
Complete all subjects and attain a minimum mark of 70% in all programs, pass three skills performance demonstrations, have current First Aid and Basic Rescuer (Level C) CPR certification, complete all practicum hours and pass PSW Final Standardized Examination administered by the National Association of Career Colleges.
